4x4 TAG ALONG TOURS

For your next 4x4 adventure, experience the real Pyrenees... drive yourself through one of the last great wilderness regions in Europe in your own 4x4 on a Landtreks Adventure Tour. World class trail driving on your doorstep!

Landtreks are "driven to explore" we are enthusiasts ouselves. Originally from the UK, we have been enjoying, exploring and driving in the Pyrenees since 1991 and Landtreks has been fully registered as a business, organising, supporting and guiding on our Explorer tours here since 2004.  Being here full time means Landtreks not only knows the Pyrenees extremely well, but also understands and complies with the local laws and regulations. Our local knowledge makes our tours that bit special!

In general we run around 10 Pyrenean Explorer tours here each year and at least one "Explorer Special" tour to a different destination. Our tours are all about exploration and trail driving and are for anyone with a passion for 4x4 travel and adventure; they are as much fun for the family as an individual enthusiast. With basic 4x4 driving skills and commonsense the tours are suitable and enjoyable for all types of 4x4's and levels of driving experience.

TRAVERSE THE PYRENEES

Straddling the border of France and Spain towers the magnificent Pyrenean Mountain range, which at its highest stands at over 3,000m tall (almost 10,000 feet). It is one of the remotest regions in Europe, a region most never truly see, let alone traverse!

Our Pyrenean Explorer Coast 2 Coast Tag Along Tour is a true crossing of the magnificent Pyrenees, starting right on the Atlantic Ocean and finishing at the warm blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea; it surely must rank as one of the top 4x4 driving adventures in Europe.

We start our 1300km traverse on the coast of the Pyrenees Atlantiques, from where we head due east through the undulating hills of the Basque region into the central and high Pyrenees with its rushing rivers, waterfalls and glaciers. We will park our 4x4's on trail at almost 2,700m (9,000 feet) with Griffon vultures flying overhead and visit the Principality of Andorra via ancient smugglers routes. From Andorra we will head into remoter regions of the Spanish Pyrenees, eventually winding our way down through olive groves and vinyards to the Pyrenees Orientales and the Mediterranean Coast.

We stay in good campsites with full facilites and most have swimming pools and bar/restaurants. We also include rest days in the tour, when you can either just relax around the campsite or visit the local sights and attractions.

This is a 14 night camping based expedition, driving the trails of and exploring the Pyrenean countries of France, Andorra and Spain; three different countries with several different languages and differing cultures... quite an adventure!!

This tour takes in 3 countries in 7 days of adventure 4x4 travel amongst the high peaks and ancient smuggler's routes of the Pyrenees...

The "Pyrenean Explorer 3 Frontiers" Tag Along Tour is a great way to see and experience the real Pyrénées... it's a 7 day 4x4 expedition exploring right into the heart of the French, Andorran and Spanish Pyrénées along little known ancient smuggler's routes, mountain trails and passes.

The "Pyrenean Explorer Mountain & Med" Tag Along Tour gives you the opportunity to explore the coast and mountains of North Eastern Spain. The tour starts near to the picturesque coastal village of Collioure, in the Pyrenees-Orientales region of France.  From here we head into the mountains and then down along the cliffs through fishing villages to the Spanish coastline. The tour stays close to the Mediterranean coast for the fist few days, traversing easily driven trails, then crosses the plains climbing through cork forests along sandy trails, with glimpses back to the Med, before heading inland up into the mountains proper along more testing trails and into more remote regions.

This is a 7 day tour which includes 2 rest days; the first rest day being on the Mediterranean coast but also only a short drive away from a characterful medieval town and on the second rest day we are up in the mountains staying at a quiet campsite, yet only 35km from the bustling Mediterranean coast and an hours drive into Barcelona with its extraordinary cathedral, fabulous Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and Las Ramblas with its colourful flower stalls and street cafes.

EXPLORER CORSICA

EXPLORER CORSICA TAG ALONG TOUR

The island of Corsica, situated off the coast from mainland France, encircled by the clear turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, its coast fringed by both white sandy beaches and towering pink cliffs, no wonder it has been christened l'Ile de Beauté (the 'Isle of Beauty') and it certainly lives up to its name!

We take in, the highest mountain trails, winding lanes and passes, stunning gorges, aromatic maquis trails and coastal desert trails of white sand leading down to deserted beaches, traveling through picturesque towns and villages, guarded by ancient Genoese towers and citadels. A laid-back exploration of the islands lanes, tracks and trails.

Please enquire for next tour dates and price.

EXPLORER ICELAND

EXPLORER ICELAND TAG ALONG TOUR

Iceland, land of the sagas, famously home to volcanoes, geysers and boiling mud pools, a land still being shaped by nature, a geologist’s paradise so near yet so different to the rest of Europe. Iceland is renowned for its surreal landscape and fantastic trail driving, lava fields, vast glacial plains, numerous river crossings, hot springs, all generally only accessible by 4x4. We first ventured there way back in an old 2a Land Rover and were simply blown away by the landscape and the opportunities to enjoy exploring by 4x4.

Iceland may well surprise, having a much milder climate than its chilly name and northerly location would imply. Even though the country is very close to the Arctic Circle its climate is moderated by the Gulf Stream and summer temperatures can reach 25°c, so bring along sun cream as well as a fleece.

As per all our tours we will be wanting to explore as much as possible whilst there, traversing and dissecting the island we venture north, south, east and west, taking in all that is best. There are incredible 4x4 trails in abundance, but Iceland offers much more! So, the Explorer Iceland tour includes time for sightseeing as there really are sights to be seen - volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, whales, lagoons, craters, and not forgetting Europe's most northerly capital of Reykjavik.

It is a two week tour on the island plus travel during August (the height of summer in Iceland). This is the time of year when we have previously visited the island and the best time to go, the rivers are at their lowest and temperature warmest, with pretty much twenty four hours of daylight too.

CAMPING / ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

v

We stay at official campsites with the benefit of all the usual facilities; some have restaurants and swimming pools and some offer activities such as rafting, canoeing, carting and horse riding, ideal on your "rest" days and where possible they are close to where the trails finish, so we have minimal driving at the end of the day.

All the tours are camping based tours as this is what the majority of our guests ask for. So when you book a place on a tour we arrange your camping reservations, although you would be responsible for your own camping fees which are paid directly to the campsite on arrival, this way paying for exactly what you want. The average high season price for camping is only around 6.00 Euros per item, an item being a tent, vehicle or adult (children around 5.00 Euros).

It is also possible to do the majority of our tours without camping. So, because with us you have not already paid for camping as part of the tour price you could if you wish decide to stay in local (to the campsites) hotels, cabins, chalets or B&B's for some or all of the nights and many guests do.  This has proved to be a very good flexible formula for varying pockets and accommodation wants and tastes over the years.

This is what a few of our previous guests said about our Pyrenean Explorer tours...

"had the best holiday ever, we haven't stopped talking about it since we got back the views were breath taking and the places we went were brilliant"

"THE WEEKS TREK WHICH ALL OF US AGREED, IT WAS MOST CERTAINLY AN UNBELIVEABLE EXPERIENCE, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT"

"we both really enjoyed ourselves and have both commented on the work that you have both put into organising these trips"

"Thanks so much for last week. The trip was better than I expected and the scenery spectacular, I'll definitely be back whatever happens"

... and you can read more from our guests on our Pyrenees page.

Tag Along Costs & Info

Remember, Landtreks is the company that only charges per vehicle on all our Pyrenean Explorer, Corisca/Sardinia/Portugal Tours, not per person, with no limit on the number of passengers in the vehicle. This works out much less expensive for families and groups. See prices page for details of tour costs.

What is included in the Tour Price?

Tour Price - On our Pyrenean Explorer and Corsica/Sardinia Tag Along Tours you only pay for your vehicle, people come free! We only charge per vehicle not per person, with no limit on the number of passengers in the vehicle as this works out much less expensive for families and groups. There are no extra hidden charges, single supplements etc. etc.

Pre Tour - All our preparation for the tour including finding and reccying routes; preparation is made much easier though as we specialise and live here full time in the Pyrenees.

Driver & Navigator - Your experienced driver and navigator are both with you from start to finish ensuring that your trip runs as smoothly as possible, camping with you and present even on rest days.

Support Vehicle - the support vehicle carries basic spares and recovery equipment etc. We will always do our best to repair any breakdown but if this is not possible we will endeavour to get you to a recoverable position.

What is NOT included in the Tour Price?

Camping /Other Accommodation – As we only charge per vehicle it is virtually impossible to include camping /other accommodation costs per person in the price of the tour, as one vehicle could contain one person and another vehicle many more; the number of passengers makes no difference to the tour price. We can not pay for the camping / other accommodation whilst only charging per vehicle.

Also, because with us you have not already paid for camping as part of the tour price you could if you wish decide to stay in a hotel, chalet or B&B for some or all of the nights; many do.  This has proved to be a very good flexible formula for varying pockets and accommodation wants and tastes over the years.

Ferries – On our Pyrenees & Corsica/Sardinia tours we do not include ferries, but neither do we charge for them either and our prices reflect this. Many of our guests come from mainland Europe, so have no need for them anyway. UK guests often prefer to arrive via the mini-cruise/ferry to Bilbao or Santander and then return via Calais /Dover or Euro Tunnel making a circuit.

Ferry costs and camping fees whether you pay them as “included” in the tour price, or have the flexibility to change your mind, as with us, one way or another you pay for them.

Full terms and conditions are available when booking, together with general information etc. and we also provide a suggested camping kit list.

We provide a suggested vehicle kit list, but the biggest asset to any 4x4 is a decent set of All Terrain or better tyres fitted to a vehicle. Although under body protection is always a good idea and we do recommend it, especially for our Pyrenean Explorer Expeditions, many vehicles come along without it. Please contact us for any advice.

Numbers of vehicles

We organise tours for groups of up to 6 vehicles (France, Corsica, Sardinia, Iceland, Portugal, The Alps) outside the Spanish Pyrenees.

The only restriction we have on vehicle numbers is on our 14 & 7 Day Pyrenean Explorer Tag Along Tours, were Spanish regulations stipulate a maximum 4 vehicle convoy; we respect and comply with this.
